Later today, the federal government will table Budget 2025, the first tabled by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government. The last federal Budget was tabled in April 2024, eighteen months ago. A lot has changed since then.

This Budget will be a defining moment for the Carney government. We will finally get to see what “spend less, invest more” actually looks like. We’ll get fresh numbers on debt, deficits, revenue, fiscal projections and other key indicators. But we’re also likely to get much more.

We’ve been told that this budget will deliver a plan to transform Canada’s economy and make us less reliant on the United States. We’ve committed to substantially increased military spending. It’s expected the Budget will have major cuts to the federal civil service. We’ve also been promised a new climate strategy and immigration targets. The list goes on.

Expectations are high, and there’s going to be a lot to digest. So we’ve assembled the MBP Intelligence Team to help you figure out what to watch for later today:

  • MEREDITH: What will the government's debt management strategy be?
  • BOESSENKOOL: Budget must have credible tools to deliver on lofty ambitions
  • PHILLIPS: Health care and support for young people will make or break the new two-party system
  • WOODFINDEN: Does the government have a plan to effectively communicate a Budget that contains a smorgasbord of priorities?
